Salto, il dipartimento delle pietre preziose e delle terme
Salto è per me il dipartimento uruguaiano delle pietre preziose e delle terme. Si trova sul litorale nordoccidentale del paese e al nord confina con Artigas, al sud con Paysandù, all’est con Rivera e Tacuarembò, mentre ad ovest con la provincia argentina di Entre Rìos che separa il fiume Uruguay. La capitale è Salto (si chiama uguale) e si trova 502 km da Montevideo e si trova proprio davanti alla città argentina di Concordia. Salto è anche la patria del grande scrittore uruguaiano Horacio Quiroga (1878-1937) che è vissuto in Argentina.
Il nome di Salto proviene dalle cascate di acqua, chiamate saltos in spagnolo. Tempo fa ci vivevano gli indigeni guaranì e chiamavano il territorio con la parola “ytu” che significa appunto cascata d’acqua (salto).
Anche questo dipartimento ha la sua storia di guerre alle spalle. Tra gli eroi troviamo Giuseppe Garibaldi, al quale è stato dedicato un monumento e un viale nella capitale di Salto. Il breve soggiorno del nostro italiano ha lasciato segno.

Il dipartimento Salto è famoso per la sua ricchezza naturale e si considera una delle zone più produttive e economicamente stabili del paese. Infatti qui troviamo la centrale idroelettrica di Salto Grande, la sorgente di acqua termale e una quantità di pietre semi preziose. Ed è proprio qui che ho acquistato le mie pietre preferite come l’ametista ed il quarzo rosa. Inoltre ne ho trovate tante per le stradine e di tutti i colori e grandezze. Quindi per me Salto non è solamente il dipartimento delle terme ma anche delle pietre!
Le terme che troviamo in questo posto sono le Terme di Salto Grande, Terme del Daymàn, Terme di Arapey ed il famoso Parco acquatico Horacio Quiroga. Le acque termali naturali attirano a Salto ogni anno molti turisti da tutto il paese e dall’Argentina.

Il fiume di Uruguay è l’unico bacino idrografico che drena verso Salto e appartiene al bacino del Plata (Cuenca del Plata). Dal fiume del Uruguay sfociano i fiumi Itapebì Chico, Itapebì Grande, San Antonio Grande e Yacuy.
Il clima è caldo ed umido d’estate e le numerose piogge causano eventuali crescite delle acque dei fiumi Arapey, Daymàn e Uruguay.
La vegetazione a Salto e dintorni è variata, qui possiamo trovare sia l’eucalipto che i limoni e così anche nella fauna troviamo puma, struzzi, volpe grigia e carpincho. Nei dintorni troviamo le vie fluviali ed il bosco galleria, dove cresce il famoso albero timbò. Salto nella sua vasta campagna è ricca di allevamento di bestiame e di agricoltura. Infatti noi ne abbiamo approfittato anche per fare un bellissimo giro a cavallo….durante la passeggiata abbiamo trovato asini in libertà e i teros appena nati!
Qualche curiosità:
Il TERO è l’uccello tipico dei campi del Uruguay. Spesso e volentieri vive vicino a laghi e lagune o fiumi ma si può trovare anche in zone urbane. Quest’uccello è considerato un “guardiano” dato che in presenza di estranei inizia ad emettere dei gridi tipo tero tero tero come se scattasse un allarme. Quindi molti tengono quest’uccello come animale domestico al posto del cane, per avvisare l’arrivo dei ladri o di sconosciuti a casa. Il volatile più guardiano della terra orientale originaria del America del sud è proprio il cosiddetto Tero!

Salto es para mì el departamento uruguayo de las piedras preciosas y de las termas. El departamento se encuentra sobre el litoral nordoccidental del pais. En el norte limita con Artigas, al sur con Paysandù, al al este con Rivera y Tacuarembò, a oeste con la provincia argentina de Entre Rìos, que separa el rìo Uruguay. La capital se llama Salto, igual al departamento y se encuentra a 502 km de Montevideo, justo en frente de la ciudad argentina Concordia. Salto es tambièn la patria de Horacio Quiroga (1878-1937) el famoso escritor uruguayo que viviò en Argentina.
El nombre de este departamento surge de los saltos de agua. Antes vivìan ahì los indigenas guaranì y llamban el territorio con la palabra “ytu” que significa cascada de agua o salto de agua.
Tambièn Salto tiene su historia con sus guerras y sus enfrentamientos bélicos. Entre todos los hèroes podemos acordarnos del italiano Giuseppe Garibaldi, gracias a un monumento y una avenida en la capital de Salto que llevan su nombre. Su breve estadìa dejò unas huellas.
El departamento de Salto es famoso por su riqueza natural y se considera una de las zonas màs productivas y económicamente estables del pais. Aquì encontramos la central hidroeléctrica de la Represa de Salto Grande, las fuentes de agua termal y abundancia de piedras semipreciosas. Y es exactamente aquì que comprè mis piedras preferidas como la amatista y el cuarzo rosado. Aparte encontrè muchas piedras por las calles, de todos colores y medidas. Dirìa por eso que Salto es el departamento de las piedras y de las aguas termales!
Las termas de Salto son las Termas de Salto Grande, Termas del Daymàn, Termas de Arapey y el Parque Acuàtico Horacio Quiroga. Las aguas termales naturales llaman a muchos turistas a Salto todos los años.

El rìo de Uruguay es la unica cuenca hidrográfica que drena al departamento de Salto y apartenece a la Cuenca del Plata. Desde el rìo de Uruguay desembocan los arroyos Itapebì Chico, Itapebì Grande, San Antonio Grande y Yacuy
El clima es càlido y hùmedo en verano. Las numerosas lluvias ocasionan eventuales crecidas en los rìos Arapey, Daymàn y Uruguay.
Salto tiene una vegetaciòn muy variada del eucalipto hasta los limoneros y como fauna encontramos pumas, ñandùs (criados, faenados y exportados al extranjero), zorros grises, carpinchos y mulitas. Encontramos tambièn alrededor de las vìas fluviales al bosque galerìa (con entre todo timbò). Salto es rica de ganaderìa y de agricoltura y tiene mucho campo. Aquì no deberìan perderse un paseo en caballo en el media del campo….encontrarà muchas sorpresas como burros en libertad o teros recien nacidos.
Curiosidades:
TERO – El ave típica de los campos de Uruguay vive sobre todo en la cercanía de lagos y lagunas, ríos, arroyos, pero se puede encontrar tambièn en zonas urbanas. Se considera como un “guardián” debido a que ante la presencia de un ser extraño, el Tero comienza a dar gritos de alarma, parecido al sonido tero tero tero. Por este motivo se toma el Tero como mascota, en cambio del perro. El Tero es el ave más guardiana de la tierra oriental originaria de América del Sur!

Salto is for me the Uruguayan department of precious stones and thermal baths. It is situated on the north-western coast of the country. It makes border with the region of Artigas on the north, Paysandù on the south, with Rivera and Tacuarembò on the east, while on the western border with the Argentinean province of Entre Rìos that separates the river Uruguay. The capital is Salto, it takes the name of the department, and lies 502 km form Montevideo, in front of the Argentinean town Concordia. Salto is also the town of the famous Uruguayan writer Horacio Quiroga (1878-1937) who lived in Argentina.

The name of Salto comes from the waterfalls, called saltos in Spanish. Times ago there where living the indigenous people guaranì who called it “ytu” that means waterfall (salto).
Even this department has its history. Among the heroes we remember also the Italian Giuseppe Garibaldi. We find a monument and a street with his name in Salto. His short stay left a sign.
The department of Salto is famous for its natural resources and is considered one of the most productive departments of the country and with a stable economy.
Here we find the hydroelectric central of Salto Grande, the spring of thermal water and lots of semi precious stones. In this region I bought my stones as amethyst and rose quartz and also found many. Therefore Salto is for me the region of precious stones, not just of thermal water!

The thermal baths we find here are the following: Thermal baths of Salto Grande, Thermal baths of Daymàn, Thermal baths of Arapey and the famous Waterpark Horacio Quiroga. The thermal baths with natural water called every year lots of tourists to the department, also from Argentina.
The river Uruguay is the only basin hydrographic that drains to Salto and belongs to the Plata basin (Cuenca del Plata). The following streams flow out from the river of Uruguay : Itapebì. Itapebì Chico, Itapebì, Grande and Yacuy.

The climate is warm and humid during summer time and the strong rainfalls make the rivers Arapey, Daymàn and Uruguay grow and produce flood.
The vegetation of Salto and surroundings is various, here we can find eucalyptus and lemon trees and also different kinds of animals as puma, ostrich, the grey fox and the famous carpincho. In the surroundings we have the fluvial courses and the gallery wood, home of the timbò, the typical tree of Uruguay. Salto in its large countryside is very rich on livestock and agriculture. We took a nice ride through the country on the back of the horses. During the ride we met donkeys and just born teros!
Curiosites:
Tero is a typical bird of the Uruguayan countryside. It lives near lakes and lagoons or streams, but we can find It sometimes in urban areas. This bird is considered a watchman because as soon as a stranger approaches to the house it begins to cry loud tero tero tero …as a warning. Therefore people use it as a pet, instead of a dog, in order to warn when thieves arrive. The most watchman bird of South America is the Tero!
